Saturday Training Rides

Saturday July 9, 2011 Training Ride

For those of us who will be doing the Michigander, Saturday July 9th is exactly one week before the start of this year’s ‘gander.

A lot of riders will be doing the Helluv a Ride in Ann Arbor, which offers 64 mile and 100 mile routes.

For me, alas a family obligation in the early afternoon and a work obligation at 5PM forces me to just get the miles in.

I’ll be parking at the Onyx Ice Arena in Rochester Hills and heading out for a long training ride along the Macomb Orchard Trail at 9am. I’m planning to ride there from home so if you want to join us, make sure you and your bike are on the trail (just follow the sidewalk out front on Dequindre to the right (South) for a couple hundred feet and you’ll run into the trail.)

The MOT is now just about all set to Richmond. Depending on timing, I’d like to do the whole route, but because it is out and back, you can do whatever section you want.

I hope to see you at 9AM. Be waiting where the trail crosses Dequindre and I’ll see you at 9AM sharp. Bring lots of water, it’s going to be hot and sunny.

Here’s a map of the meet spot.

Saturday June 25: Where To?

It’s long ride time as we ger ready for this year’s Michigander. Where to this Saturday? How many miles? What routes/trails? Hit comments to offer up times and meet places. Should be doing 50 miles as a minimum on these long Saturday rides by now.

Saturday April 9 Training Ride

Weather permitting, I’ll be riding outdoors Saturday April 9.

Because of an afternoon commitment, I have to leave a bit earlier, starting out at 8:30AM from the usual meet place – the parking lot of the Stony Creek metro Park. I’m planning on doing 20-25 miles on paved roads around the park.

If you’ll be there, let me know.

First Outdoor Ride for 2011 (Video)

It was cold out there today. But outdoors we did ride.
Tim, Abdu, Tina and I did the paved road 20.5 route around Stony Creek Metro Park.
Pet Benson and his mountain bike bunch did a 30 miler on gravel roads.
The starting temp this morning was 30 degrees. But no one complained and by the end of the ride, the cold wasn’t a factor. Then again, we were pretty bundled up, as you can see in the video below.
I’m cross posting this on my other biking site… http://michiganbiking.org
That’s a pretty cool domain and I snapped it up. I’ll post a complete ride calendar there as well as lots of articles on Michigan’s key events.
I’ll keep this site devoted to Saturday rides and training for the Michigander.
And the other two sites on my biking blog network… http://bikefitness.net and http://spinningforfitness.com… will deal with fitness and training.

Saturday April 2 Outdoor Training Ride Is Still On

I’m still planning on riding outdoors on Saturday April 2. Temps are expected to be on the chilly side, 42 to 46. There is a slight chance of rain or snow but I’m optimistic that it’s going to be fine. We’ll leave at 9AM sharp from the parking lot of the boat launch at Stony Creek Metro Park.

I’m planning on doing at least 20 miles. If my road bike is back from the LBS (it’s getting an new rear wheel… the old one was cracked and Trek is supposed to be replacing it), I’ll ride it. If not, I’ll ride mt Superfly MB.

Check  my twitter account http://twitter.com/michigandermike as I will tweet about 7:45AM Saturday a go or no go message in case the weather is iffy.

What Are You Doing to Get in Bike Riding Shape?

I was heading out this morning to hook up with Pat Benson and a bunch of tough old geezers who train most days – even in the winter – from the boat launch of the Stony Creek Metro Park in the northern Detroit suburbs.

But the temperature is 12 degrees. That’s too cold for me. I don’t have foot or hand protection for such temps.

So it’s spinning class for me.

I’ve been doing four and five hour long spinning classes every week since late summer which, if the instructor is right, should give me the equivalent of over 100 miles a week. I also have a spinning bike at home and an elliptical and occasionally do those when I can’t get to the health club. So I think I’m going into the bike riding season in the best shape of my life, though I’m anxious to ride outside and see if that’s true.

The weather forecast for Saturday April 2 looks promising. Temps getting into the upper 40′s or low 50′s are predicted. Barring rain, ice of below 20 degrees, I’m planning on a Stony Creek ride at 9 AM that day. Looks like five others have indicated an interest, too.

Meanwhile, I’m wondering how your winter conditioning has been going. What are you doing to get in bike riding shape?

April 2 Training Ride at Stony Creek

I was hoping we’d be doing a lot more riding outside by now. You too?

Still, weather permitting, I’m thinking that maybe we can try for an outside ride Saturday April 2 at Stony Creek Metro Park in Washington, MI.

We’ll meet at the boat ramp and be ready to ride at 9AM. We’ll do 15-20 miles, depending on what those who show up want to do.
